This week we landed at the DW Stadium, supporting the Heatable Wigan Athletic Academy with a Gambling Harms workshop. Sessions were youth-led and discussion-based, breaking down the unhealthy link between sport and gambling, and unpacking the real-life risks young people face today — from digital and online gambling to the constant pull of social media advertising.

The aim was simple: give players the space and confidence to question what they’re seeing, not just accept it as part of the game.

"At Wigan Athletic FC, we take a proactive approach to supporting our young people, specifically with the challenges they will face as they develop personally and grow as young professionals. As part of that support, we aim to provide our players with a varied series of sessions, guest speakers and lived experience into the building, so that they can increase their awareness, have contact with independent individuals and organisations who can support them if/when needed.

ATO aligned with our vision in terms of support, wanting to create an authentic, real and raw experience of the dangers that surround them as young people and players within football. Holding the attention of a young audience can sometimes be difficult, Aaron was relatable, respectful and professional throughout, as a result, the lads were engaged and inquisitive to what he had to say.

A by-product of which was high level of awareness of the potential dangers, education on where to seek support and adding value to our overall provision at the Academy. For those reasons, we wouldn't hesitate to invite Aaron back in next season or encourage other Academies to have a conversation with Aaron about how he can provide an added benefit to the wider development of their players too"
