Client Background

Sandwell family of colleges is the largest further education provider in the West Midlands, based in the heart of West Bromwich. Known for its state-of-the-art facilities and wide range of vocational and academic courses, the college supports thousands of students aged 16 and over in developing skills for employment, apprenticeships, and higher education.

Challenge

Young people in areas like Sandwell often face a mix of social and economic challenges that can affect their opportunities and wellbeing. High living costs, lower household incomes, and the presence of crime or exploitation in some communities can create added pressure for young people as they think about their future. Access to training, stable employment, or career progression may feel out of reach, which can lead to frustration and uncertainty. These factors can also make young people more vulnerable to risk-taking behaviours, including gambling—especially as evidence shows gambling shops are far more concentrated in deprived areas compared to more affluent ones.

Solution

We have worked with college learners to increase awareness of gambling-related harm. Through interactive workshops, we explored how gambling is promoted through sport, social media, and advertising, and encouraged open discussion about its risks. Our sessions focus on developing critical thinking and creating space for young people to challenge the normalisation of gambling.

Students have also worked collaboratively to create their own awareness campaigns, encouraging the use of relatable language, designed to engage a younger view. They build confidence, communication skills, and a sense of ownership over positive change.

By equipping young people with knowledge and tools to make informed choices, we aim to reduce stigma, raise awareness, and strengthen resilience within communities most at risk.
