The workshop in Hounslow explored the growing connection between elite football and the gambling industry, helping players recognise risks and build confidence to make informed decisions. It also encouraged open discussion around gambling harm and how to support teammates who may be struggling.

The NFL Academy is a flagship initiative developing elite American football talent while combining full-time education with life skills and character development. The UK campus is based at Loughborough’s world-renowned centre of sporting excellence, in partnership with Loughborough College and Loughborough University. A second campus operates in Australia, in collaboration with A.B. Paterson College on the Gold Coast.
The program promotes elite performance and player pathway opportunities, supporting student-athletes in securing football scholarships to U.S. colleges. Since its inception, more than 40 players have received college offers, with 19 alumni set to play NCAA Division 1 football in the 2024–25 season.
Challenge
Young athletes are increasingly exposed to gambling advertising via TV, radio, social media, and influencer or celebrity endorsements—often without being informed of the potential harms. These messages rarely highlight the financial, physical, or psychological risks associated with gambling.
Given the diverse pathways NFL Academy graduates may pursue—whether continuing education in the UK or progressing to U.S. college football—it was essential to equip students with the tools to navigate media environments in both countries. Against The Odds was brought in to deliver culturally relevant, comprehensive education around the risks of gambling and addiction.
