The Gambling Commission has charged 15 individuals – including former MPs, political staff, and people connected to government – for allegedly placing bets on the UK general election date before it was officially announced.

They’re accused of using inside information to profit from betting markets. This kind of behaviour is classed as cheating under the Gambling Act, and all those involved are expected to appear in court in June 2025.

Some of those charged had senior roles in political campaigning, while others worked closely with key decision-makers. One former police officer is also facing charges.

This scandal hits at the heart of public trust. When people in or around politics use privileged information to make money through gambling, it sends a message that the system works differently for those in power.

The political party involved has suspended those linked to the investigation and said it is cooperating fully with authorities. But for many young voters, the damage may already be done.
